Skipping Girl Vinegar - Sift The Noise (Single)
Bugle playing possums, a zeppelin and King Kong. That is what you will find when you throw Skipping Girl Vinegar’s latest single Sift the Noise into a computer.
Every now and again you get the pleasure to review something that isn’t just music, but art in its own right. Even before listening to the song I overwhelmed by the lengths the band had gone to create a unique experience. The CD itself resembles fifties vinyl, complete with a fading “side A” and the bands name, which can be read through the plain black cardboard sleave. Flipping over the sleave and I am greeted with an orange envelope containing a white library card which can be removed to view details about the band and production as well as dates and signatures of its borrowing history.
Before I get too distracted by the pretty packaging, I have to tell you about the animated music video that came on the disc. The video, which politely informs me to be chapter two, starts off with the band’s van breaking down in all its collaged arty coolness, which leaves the band to start their epic journey via four-person-bicycle to their gig at “pop-city”. Along with zeppelins and possums, there is the band cat that follows the entire journey, until finally reaching their show where they perform to pretty much every cute animal in existence. Yes! We are talking bunnies, foxes and pipe smoking deer.
The music itself is a warm blend of folk-pop, riddled with soft drums, banjo and soothing vocals. I was instantly lost in the track, and found myself singing along in no time. Lyrics include phrases like “All the good things come in time” which seemed to make this reviewers bitter, metal loving heart become all flustered and happy. Of course I won’t admit how freaking cute and catchy this song it, so instead I’ll say something masculine and generic like “Skipping Girl Vinegar really nailed this track”.
This is an awesome single. When you guys are playing in Brisbane I’ll be at your show singing along to all the words and buying your merch. I’ll be the guy that no longer likes metal and will be wearing the tour T-shirt.
